To the north, Guadeloupe spreads across the Caribbean like a giant butterfly - one wing (Basse Terre) supporting a volcanic mountain range, hot water springs and tumbling waterfalls; the other (Grande Terre) playing host to great plantations of sugar cane and a sandy shoreline where most of the leading hotels are to be found. Here the coast is carved into a succession of coves, where the superb marine life attracts many divers and snorkellers. Like its sister-island, Guadeloupe has a capital (Pointe-a-Pitre) and hotels that offer visitors an easygoing and cosmopolitan mood - not to mention the chance of a close encounter with some delicious Creole and French cuisines!
